YOU ARE NOT YOUR CHILD’S FRIEND
A very common mistake made by parents today is wanting to be so involved in their children’s lives that they take on the role of a friend instead of a parent. When this happens, discipline often takes a back seat to having fun and being cool. Don’t misunderstand me – you certainly need to be involved with you children and have LOTS of fun in the process, but children need parents to guide them.
Many parents I speak with express a fear of their child not liking them if they correct poor behavior. This is a critical mistake. Never sacrifice the opportunity to teach your child a vital life lesson because you’re afraid of how they may react.
All parents need to realize that there will be times when your children don’t like you. I’m sure you remember times when you did not like your own parents because of some discipline they imposed - that’s natural and should be expected at times.
Remember that you are raising your child to be a successful adult. Having a good parent is many times more valuable to your child than having a good friend.
