WHY YELLING AT YOUR KIDS IS SUCH A BAD IDEA
Today, with parenting advice coming from many different directions and perspectives, many parents are confused about how to properly discipline their children. Due to time constraints and stress, parents often feel like they don’t have the time it takes to properly administer time-out or chore –related discipline measures. Also, for many parents, spanking is, well…..just out. So, unfortunately, they resort to yelling.
Yelling may give the parent some satisfaction that they, at least, did something, but yelling is a TERRIBLE disciplinary technique. In addition to the fact that is just doesn’t work because there is no real consequence employed, it also makes the “yeller” look weak and out-of-control….something you never want your children to question.
Think of it this way: how does it make you feel when someone yells at you? Is it effective at getting you to change your behavior, or does it just make you want to yell back? The police officer doesn’t yell at you. He or she simply gives you a ticket and tells you to have a nice day.
When your child requires discipline, the most effective approach is to administer the discipline in a calm, but firm voice, with little, or no, emotion. That lets your child know that you are in control and you can handle anything they throw at you. When children know that they can’t push your buttons, they quit trying. That makes your parenting MUCH easier and more fun.
Simply put, don’t yell at your kids. Develop a disciplinary plan that is reasonable and consistent and use it.
