YOU THINK YOUR JOB IS HARD?!!??
I can’t think of too many jobs more physically demanding than digging. Over the years, I have spent many hours doing the hard work of roofing, installing 4” oilfield pipeline, and loading 80 pound sacks of redi-mix concrete on and off a truck. These were just a few of the jobs I’ve had in years past. But, I have to say that I hate digging the most - especially, in the hard caliche where I live.
On the thinking side, I would guess that any occupation that requires you to make life or death decisions would be extremely challenging. The jobs of doctors, nurses, some engineers, and company executives in charge of a lot of people’s lives can be incredibly difficult at times.
In fact, I don’t think here are too many people that would say they have an easy job. There is one job, however, that makes every other job look like a breeze by comparison. What is the most difficult job in the whole universe? GOOD PARENTING – wins by a landslide.
Good parenting requires energy, patience, creativity, rational judgment, physical agility, and most importantly……time. Good parenting never gets a coffee break. Good parenting doesn’t go home at five, no lunch hour, no weekends off, and no vacations. It is a 24-7-365-for all eternity job.
You’ve no doubt noticed that I’ve said good parenting and not just parenting. I make the distinction for obvious reasons. We could simply provide our offspring with a place to sleep and a sandwich of some sort every now and then. Unfortunately, there are way too many parents who do just that and only that. Meeting these physical needs is a piece of cake compared to providing for the mental, emotional, and spiritual needs that are equally important in raising children.
Do yourself a favor and resign yourself to the fact that being a good parent is very difficult. If you expect it to be easy then you’ll be continually frustrated and angry at how much effort it requires. The good news is that because good parenting is the hardest job in the world, it comes with the greatest rewards.
